Cost and responsibility! A full-time senior developer costs £60k per year plus employer costs, equipment and employer's risk. And good luck getting rid of them if they're not up to scratch. You can cancel me anytime if you're not happy.
I can but most people hire me to either take ownership of the project and be the sole developer or carve out a particular portion for me to be responsible for. I also can't be on Slack or attend daily standups.
I knew a guy who had an offshore development team. Every feature was at least 100 hours of work. Things that should have taken an afternoon took weeks. If you go down this route I wish you luck (you will need every bit of it).
To an extent. Here's the deal - I expect from time to time there to be a real emergency. You call me, I will do my best to drop what I'm doing and get on the case. The expectation is that these are not every week. And when an incident like this occurs, I'll then be working to make sure it doesn't happen again.
You can cancel at any time. There is no contractual lock in.
I don't track hours. Hours have little relevance to the end result you're after. I only work with 3 clients at one time on a retainer basis. The output of my work and value created has not come under question yet.
So, I charge up-front. In the first month if you decide it's not for you I'll refund you. That's it really. So it's a pretty risk free investment.
